Tips for the caravan owner

The following are a few suggestions that may make your time with your caravan more enjoyable.

This is a general guide only, always check manufacturers specifications and guidelines in accordance to their instruction manual

  • When travelling with your van attached always put an extra 2psi in your cars rear tyres.
  • Always inflate your caravan tyres to 40psi, always check specs supplied by manufacturer.
  • Change back at least one gear when travelling down a hill, also do this when going up hills so as not to labour the motor too much.
  • Be alert at all times especially while towing a caravan (Do not get distracted by children or passengers, no skylarking)
  • Before leaving home on each outing always check gas fittings for leaks, to do this make up a solution of soapy water at a ratio of 20:1 part dish washing liquid into a spray bottle and spray all gas fittings and look for small bubbles appearing.
  • To aid in the prevention of a leak, you should at least once a year inspect the roof of the van and reseal all joins with a mixture of caravan sealer and white gloss paint, this will ensure a good consistency and spread.
  • To ensure your fridge works at 100 percent you must make sure the van is perfectly level. When travelling fridge running is ok. Check manufaturers specs.
  • In a heat wave always turn your fridge down a couple of degrees as to preserve the element which can run extremely hot.

Always secure all windows, hatches and doors on your caravan before leaving and around half to one hour into your journey, stop and re-check, also checking the electric brakes.

Annexe Instruction-Basic

1: pre-prepare annexe by laying out all poles, ropes and canvas in appropriate positions

2: feed the annexe roof through the gc track from the rear of the van to the front, with the assistance of another to take the bulk weight of the annexe roof. May need step ladder.

3: Put corner posts in first and stay with 4 steel pegs and ropes.

5: Now put in other posts secured by ropes and pegs

6: If side walls are present either zip or slide into gc tracks if supplied, always slide or fix to van first, then to the roof.

7: Put outer wall of annexe on and fasten to walls as necessary.

Maintainance

Canvas and vinyl can suffer from condensation and mildew in damp or humid conditions although vinyl will dry faster as the moisture sits on the surface rather than being absorbed by the fabric, so ensure your annexe is well ventilated to prevent condensation wetting the underside of the fabric.

Do not use harsh cleaning chemicals such as bleach as this will damage the protective coating,

To prevent mould after gently cleaning simply mix a solution of 50/50 water and white vinegar and spray lightly, especially the underside of ground flaps allow to dry and then store away in a moisture free environment.

Clean all zippers with a soft brush and the spray silicone onto the zippers for effort free use.

Check all stitching for damage and repair where necessary.
